NSFAS provides pecuniary support to indigent households’ students to enable them to pursue higher education. This program is a potent mechanism to disrupt the cycle of household impoverishment and social exclusion across generations, and concurrently extend South Africa’s skills reservoir.
Nsfas Overview
The ultimate aim of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is to revolutionize itself into an efficient and effective supplier of financial aid to learners hailing from impoverished and working-class backgrounds, in a manner that is sustainable, and thus enhance their access to tertiary education and other advanced learning, while accomplishing South Africa’s goals in human resource development.
NSFAS’ mission statement explicitly defines its raison d’être, its function, and its impact on its constituents in three distinct ways: NSFAS avails financial support to qualified learners enrolled in public universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges; it screens and identifies eligible candidates, dispenses bursaries, and retrieves student loan repayments to refill the resources available for future generations; and lastly, it extends financial assistance to learners originating from underprivileged and working-class households who would otherwise be unable to bear the costs of higher education.
